sermon and preaching resourcesJoel 2:12-19

God is gracious and merciful; we can return to Him because we know this about Him. Even in the face of the promised punishment we deserve, we can find comfort in know that God’s nature is mercy not wrath.

Maybe there is way to talk about God’s nature—God’s habit of loving us—even though there are moments when this same just God becomes angry. Which do we believe to be true about God’s nature: that He is out to “get us” or that he is out to love us?

2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10

What “accepting the grace of God in vain” looks like is not terribly clear. Eugene Peterson translates it this way: “Please don’t squander one bit of this marvelous life God has given us” (The Message).

In Ash Wednesday’s context, maybe we repent of the ways we squander this life we live in grace. We are so quick to assume a next day after this one, that we can cheapen this day—squander it. Ash Wednesday’s theme of remembering we are dust ought to call us to value each day, especially this one.

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21

These are portions of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. I had a seminary professor refer to this setting as the Church’s constitutional convention. This sermon identifies what it means to be one of Jesus’ followers. Yet, we are cautioned not to do these things for outward recognition; we do these things not so much so that others around us might recognize us as followers of Jesus; we do these things so God recognizes us as followers of Jesus. More importantly, we do these things for God’s presence rather than His recognition. And more than what we actually do, Jesus calls us to pay attention to our motives for doing what we do.
